| LOW BACK PAIN |
Low back pain is probably
the most common complaint amongst athletes. Windsurfers are
no exception, and are particularly prone to lower back problems.
The spine of the human body is similar to the most of the
rig – it bends and twists in proportion to the load
exerted on it, but only stresses at weak areas, or when the
load is exceptional.
The majority of back injuries produce aggravating, nagging
pain, which is temporary if treated early and properly. However,
some low back pain is caused by more serious ailments, which
produce severe excruciating pain. Low back pain can be divided
into 3 main disorders – lumbar strain, facet joint syndrome,
and the herniated disc.
The most common type of back problem seen in Windsurfers is
lumbar strain. It can account for up to 75% of all back disorders.
A strain is basically, stretched on small tears of the muscles
and ligaments in the back. This type of injury is best treated
with bed rest for 2 – 3 days, ice and/or heat, and possible
antispasm medication.
The second type of lowback injury is... more |
| QRS / MPG PROTOCOLS |
QRS/MPG protocols that we have found most productive for
our athletes and clients.
Warning extended use of the mat on settings over 7 such as
60 minutes per session 3 days daily, is counter productive
and has proven to cause restlessness and insomnia.
QRS is an essential part of our winning program at every level,
from training to pre op to post op and rehab, this unit works!
We always consume 2.5 to 4 liters of water through out the
day and take the 200 mg mag supplement recommended.
In almost every case the athlete or client feels worse after
the first session and then progress for pain seems to take
affect within 24 hours in a clear “U turn fashion”
Soft tissue
3 treatments daily for 5 days as follows
Am pillow vital 8-10, 30 minutes
Mid day vital 8-10, 30 minutes

| SELF CONFIDENCE IN TENNIS |
Perhaps
the single most important mental ingredient professional tennis
players such as Jim Courier and Monica Seles need for success
on the tour is self-confidence. Entering Centre Court at Wimbledon
to play the finals against a hard serving, net rushing opponent
can raise doubts in even the best players. But these professionals
overcome uncertainty by learning to control their thinking
and maintaining a positive attitude.
Recreational players experience the same sorts of problems
with their self-confidence. Have you ever been in the club
championships or a tight tiebreak and had thoughts like "I
can't win this" or "I know I will double fault and
lose the match"? Fortunately, recreational players can
use the same techniques that the pros use to develop their
self-confidence and maintain a positive attitude.
Tennis Player's Litany. In order for muscles to get stronger,
they have to be exercised. The same holds true for the "self-confidence
muscle". One exercise I have developed working with tennis
players is the Tennis Player's Litany (see side box).... more |
| SHOULDER BURSITIS AND TENDINITIS |
Shoulder injuries are one of the most common problems in sports, whether
recreational or professional. An activity in which the arm
is used in repetitive or overhead movements can precipitate
shoulder bursitis or tendinitis. This includes sports such
as swimming, baseball, football and tennis. Sporting news
frequently describes professional athletes who cannot compete
because of shoulder bursitis and tendinitis. Windsurfers are
also at risk. The shoulder is constantly stressed during sailing,
whether it is waterstarting, jibing, or up hauling.
Shoulder bursitis/tendinitis is also referred to as “impingement
syndrome”. Impingement refers to the trapping of the
soft tissues of the shoulder, which leads to painful inflammation.
The shoulder joint is stabilized by a group of four muscles
called the rotator cuff. The muscles are the supraspinatus,
infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis. The tendons
of these muscles (a tendon is a tissue which attaches muscle
to bone) pass through a very tight channel between the head
of the humerus (the upper arm bone) and the acromion process

| SLUMP BUSTING: OVERCOMING PERFORMANCE |
SLUMPS IN COMPETITIVE SPORTS
Performance slumps are one of the most common, yet mysterious,
phenomena in sports. Typically viewed as unexplained drops
in performances, slumps are a source of concern for athletes
and coaches. Despite its visible place in the collective psyche
of the athletic community, little is known about the causes
or cures for performance slumps. As a consequence, this article
will look at how athletes and coaches may prevent, identify,
and overcome slumps.
What is a Slump?
Slumps are used to describe a wide variety of performance
declines. As a result, there has been no clear definition
of what a slump really is. For example, Webster's New Collegiate
Dictionary (Merriam-Webster, 1974) defines a slump as "a
period of poor or losing play by a team or individual"
(p. 1095). However, this definition lacks precision. Several
factors must be considered in defining slumps. First, ability
is important. That is, if the team is always lousy, their
poor play would not be a slump. As such, current performance
must always be compared to a... more |
